Design to increase likelihood of successful instruction!

Advantages:

Make them purposeful

  • working (time-sequence)**

  • showcasing (celebration)

 

Seven Key Steps:

  1. students own their portfolios

  2. decide on kinds of work samples to collect

  3. collect and store work samples

  4. select criteria of evaluate

  5. require student to evaluate continually

  6. schedule and conduct portfolio conferences

  7. involve parents in process

 

Include: (nice table p. 214)

  •  both teacher requirements and student choice

  • reflection

Organized Contents:

  • letter of introduction

  • table of contents

  • identification of skills or knowledge being demonstrated

  • date on all entries

  • evaluative criteria

  • student's self-reflection

 

Teachers do not give grades! Students earn them.

 

Cautions:

  • time

  • effort

  • scoring

  • adequate container
