How to Identify Primary Research                Resources

Primary Research is an original study conducted by the author(s) of an article or document.

Look for the following:

  • Abstract
  • Research Question(s)
  • Review of Literature
  • Hypothesis
  • Design
  • Method
  • Data
  • Analysis
  • Tables
  • Charts
  • Conclusions
  • Recommendations

Secondary Research is commentary on or discussion about primary research completed by persons other than the author. The most important feature of secondary sources is that they offer an interpretation of information gathered from primary sources. Common examples of a secondary source are:
