Midterm Exam

March 2007

Copy and paste this document into Word. Complete your exam (typed single-spaced) and send to Dr. Schulz mschulz@csm.edu as an email attachment.

1. You are a classroom teacher who understands that mathematical ideas cannot be passively "poured into" a passive learner. It is Curriculum Night and you are to describe to parents how children must be actively engaged in their learning in order to construct ideas. Write how you would explain why you will teach what you will teach and your methods of teaching math to parents. Help them to understand how learning math might be different for their children than it was for the parents. (Use about 250 words.)

2. Imagine you are in your future classroom. Assume you are planning a mathematics lesson on fractions that you will teach tomorrow. How will you incorporate some of the strategies you have learned for effective teaching into your lesson? Include information about classroom environment and how you will evaluate student learning.   Be sure to mention the grade level you are teaching. (Use about 200 words)
